English as an Additional Language

EAL - Primary School PYP

The mission of the English as an Additional Language (EAL) department at GESS is to ensure all students have an opportunity to develop the proficiency required for communication in daily life and for integration into the mainstream program.

Students identified as having English skills significantly below grade level receive additional support lessons in English by an EAL teacher. The EAL support may be a requirement for enrolment at our school in order for the student to cope in the mainstream classes.
Our EAL teacher works collaboratively with the classroom teacher to ensure that we assist students to participate with confidence and success. At the end of each semester, we reassess students' progress with input from the students' teachers. An additional fee is levied for the EAL tuition.

English B - Secondary School MYP

Our goal is to build the English skills necessary for students to enter mainstream classes. Most incoming students are asked to take an English language assessment. Based on their results, they will either attend English A (first-language) or English B (second-language) courses.

The main difference between English A and English B is the complexity of the language used in the classroom and on examinations. We try to keep English B courses particularly small in order to provide more individual help for students. Progress is assessed at least twice a year, combining test results and comments from all the student's teachers. There is an additional fee for English B courses.
